In DAX, all the companies which are included in the index are selected by Xetra Systems. This is different from Dow Jones Industrial Average and FTSE 100 because DAX is strictly rule-based index. The selection in this index is strictly rule-based because this index only includes 30 companies and only those companies are selected and included in the list of this index which has high market value and high standings. Whenever this index is going to add any new company in this list then Xetra systems access the company and check out the standing and market value of the company. Any company is only added to the index when the company satisfies the whole requirements of DAX.

DAX only includes top 40 most high market value and prime standards companies. The companies included in the index are international or multinational huge companies. In total, the companies listed in the DAX represent around 79 per cent of the German stock exchange value. For this reason, the DAX and its performance are also regarded as an indicator for the German share market as a whole.

In order to be a DAX company, an organisation must have been listed on the FSE for at least three years and have shares worth at least 15% of its market cap available for public trading. It must also be part of the ‘prime standard’ sector of the FSE and sufficiently represent the German economy. November 2020 saw the index undergo its largest overhaul ever, revealing that it would expand to 40 companies from its previous 30 and the criteria for membership would become much tougher.
